Scale is produced by high levels of calcium and magnesium in the water. Water with high levels of these contaminants is known as “hard water”. Groundwater which is drawn from areas below sand and limestone is particularly hard and where scheme water is a mix of surface water and groundwater it can remain as hard water. Generally the higher the concentration of groundwater the harder the water.
Hard water can have a very corrosive
effect on water appliances particularly those that heat the water such as kettles, dishwashers and washing machines. Hard water can substantially reduce the life expectancy of hot water systems, including solar hot water systems, as well as increasing the running costs. This is due to the scale on the elements needing to be heated before the water ican be heated.

Hard water also causes staining on glass and other surfaces such as shower screens as well as leaving a residue on cars after washing.
Whilst there is no evidence that hard water has any adverse health effects there is some evidence that reducing exposure to hard water may have beneficial effects on eczema. Softening water will also give better results for soaps and shampoos.
H2Only can supply and install a range of solutions for treating hard water including whole-of-house water softeners and point-of-use filtration using various resins. H2Only can also supply and install a simple, chemical-free inline water-conditioning unit made of a specially formed alloy which captures and neutralises the hard water ions to soften the water.
Please Contact H2Only for advice on the best solution for you.
